Volume calculations and earthworks control
How much has been dug out, how much is still to be filled, how big that stockpile is. These are questions that end up on an invoice, so the answer has to be open to checking. We measure, compare surfaces using a criterion set down in writing and explain where every cubic metre comes from.
Measuring volume against a clear reference
A volume only means something if you know which two surfaces it was calculated between. Before giving a figure we agree the area, the dates, the limits and the method. That way the result can be used for planning, for following the works or for backing up a measurement, and anyone can see the assumptions behind it.
Situations where it is useful
- Monitoring excavations, cuttings and embankments, including the dig for a villa on a hillside.
- Stockpile inventories of aggregates or other materials.
- Comparing the original ground, the current state and the design surface.
- Regular control of linear works, a levelled platform or an extraction site.
Fieldwork
We capture the surface with GNSS, total station, photogrammetry or LiDAR, depending on the site and the material. We take care over what is most often overlooked: the toe of stockpiles, breaklines and edges. Between surveys we keep the same reference points so that the measurements can be compared. We need to be able to measure safely, and nobody should move material while we do.
Questions about Volume calculations and earthworks
Can I convert cubic metres directly into lorry loads?
Only with added assumptions: usable capacity, permitted load, density and bulking of the material. If you give us that data we prepare scenarios, always kept separate from the geometric measurement.
Do I need to measure before starting to excavate?
It is the best option. Without a reliable initial surface, reconstructing it adds uncertainty that has to be justified. Measuring on the first day is cheap compared with arguing on the last.
Can the result be used to certify a work item?
It provides the survey measurement, if the method and scope fit the criteria of the project. Contract compliance and certification are for whoever holds that responsibility.
